CJ Hernds, 16 Eastvale, CA Sponsors: Team 3BR, Mom & Dad, Fly Racing, TPJ, Magik, Mika Metals, DT1 Filters, FMF CJ Hernds fought a hard battle over three motos to take the overall victory in the 450 Novice class at the Trans Am National. All three motos had different winners, but Hernds was able to stay consistent with a pair of 2nd place finishes on the first day and follow it up by putting his YZ450F on the top of the overall podium by taking the checkered flag in the final moto to grab the win. All three motos had side by side racing, and CJ was able to keep focused and race through the competition to stay up at the front of the pack. How is your weekend going here at the Trans Am National? It has been good, I have done a little better than I have been lately, I got on the podium every race. First day I had a pair of second place behind the leaders, and today I got the moto win in the 450 Novice and third in the 250 Novice to get a 1st and 2nd overall in the two classes. The 450 Novice 3rd moto was a tough. How did you get yourself to the win? I haven’t got my starts down very well lately, so I had to come from the mid-pack area and I was trying my hardest to catch the leaders. I just kept charging forward until the checkered flag and got the win. You have made your way to the front of the Novice class, do you have plans to move up to the Intermediate class? I want to finish up this year in Novice class, but it also depends on if I make it to Loretta Lynn’s this year. If I do good there and could get a top 5 there, I will move up to the B class after that. What classes are you going to try to qualify in?
I am going to try 250 Novice Stock and Mod, and 450 Novice Stock.
What made you pick motocross over all of the other sports?
I never really go an adrenaline rush from any of the other sports and I like to go fast, so there is only one sport to get that, and that’s motocross.
How did you get started racing motocross?
One of my good friends always rode dirtbikes and we rode quads and stuff. I finally got a dirtbike for my 7th birthday and I never wanted to touch a quad again.
What has been your biggest accomplishment in racing so far?
I won a few titles and got a podium in the Supermini class in Mammoth. The overall here today in 450 Novice and second in 250 Novice for sure, I’ve been wanting to get on the podium for a long time on the big bikes and I finally made it happen.
What is your ultimate goal in motocross?
I started out doing it as a fun sport on weekends, but now I would definitely like to make it my career and do my best.
What other hobbies do you have outside of motocross?
I ride stand-up jetskis, ride scooters and bikes, pretty much everything.
What kind of training program do you have for your racing?
I train 3 times a week with Buddy Antunez, and I am in the gym other days. He builds champions so that is where I go.
How often do you ride as part of your program?
I ride 4 to 5 times a week, I ride every weekend usually.
