Even before the start of this race season, we knew a day like this would come. We just didn’t expect it to be TODAY. At the start of the year Ryan Villopoto stated that 2015 would be his final season as a professional motocross racer and that he would leave this side of the sport, even if it wasn’t with FIM Motocross World Championship MXGP championship.
While it’s only been a few hours since the announcement was made by Kawasaki, we’re already starting to realize what an impact RV2 had on the sport. Resilient through his amateur career despite an intense rivalry with Mike Alessi, the kid from the Northwest laid waste to almost everyone he faced in the professional ranks. His returns to racing after numerous injuries were downright heroic and were featured in the 2012 documentary by Volcom and Monster Energy, 2 Be Continued.
Have a few minutes to spare? Watch the trailer and hear what icons of the sport have to say about Ryan Villopoto during his run through 2012, before he added a few more titles to his mantle. Maybe even drop a few bucks and buy the movie later on.
Thanks for the memories, RV2.
