2012 Staff Picks : Chris Kinman

Managing Editor Chris Kinman’s selection from 2012…

Favorite Cover

Josh Hill
February Issue
Anza, California

“I think I was most excited about the February 2012 cover this year. Not only is the perspective of the shot relatively unique, the subject of Josh Hill is always intriguing for me. He is my favorite racer, and to witness him overcome ridiculously devastating obstacles is motivating and inspirational. Plus, he’s a rad guy.”

New Mexico Dunes With Eli Tomac
August 7, 2012
Farmington, New Mexico

“If the Southern California tracks are monotonous to riders, they are exponentially so for photographers. One can only shoot so many berm-blasters at Pala, Milestone, Racetown, and alike. Being introduced to a setting like the dunes of Farmington, NM, (especially by a rider like Eli Tomac) is like discovering a new strip club that doesn’t charge a cover. The day was perfect. Deep sand, scattered plant life, grandiose rock formations, and the talent of Eli Tomac: what more could you ask for?”

Favorite Photo

Brett Metcalfe At Steel City
January Issue
Export, Pennsylvania

“This photo was taken during the 2011 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, but it appeared in the January 2012 issue, so I claim it within the guidelines. Action photos do little to tell a story for me these days, so this one is especially resonating. It’s black and white with a shallow depth of field, and it evokes a lot. Exhaustion, commitment, anguish… this is motocross.”

TransWorld Shadow : Josh Hill At Washougal
July 25, 2012
Washougal, Washington

“Much like the February cover, the Hill Shadow video from Washougal illustrated a racer against the odds, and that is always a great story. Also, I have always loved DOC’s style of video, so the subject matter and videographer meshed well for me, personally. You can tell DOC and Hill have a good rapport, and it makes for entertaining footage.”
