Our Online Editor recounts what stood out for him in 2012…

Favorite Cover

Akira Narita
June Issue
Kumamoto, Japan

“Donn’s annual trip to Japan is something I envy, since Lost In Translation is one of my favorite movies and seeing the newest bikes is a privilege few get. When this year’s voyage resulted in the first glimpse of the all-new 2013 Honda CRF450R, we knew that it would land on the front of our June issue. The cover of Akira Narita blowing up that powdery berm is my favorite of the year, namely because it features a different rider than the American norm and that the Godzilla cartoon stands out in a sea of ‘Go Fast Now!’ headlines.”

Jeremy McGrath At Pala
October 25, 2012
Pala, California

“For most of us, Jeremy McGrath was and will always be the icon. While the style of the sport has changed dramatically during his reign, everything about MC is timeless. His fluid riding technique, one-off painted helmets, and the fact that he still whips out a mid-90s Honda CR two-stroke on occasion makes every photo poster worthy. At the DC Shoes/TLD gear launch, Swap ditched the video camera in favor of his Canon Mark III and captured McGrath carving around Pala Raceway. Seeing MC in action like that reignited the hope of him line up at A1 again for me. He’d be a front runner…”

Eli Tomac At High Point

Mount Morris, Pennsylvania

“After claiming the 250 West Coast SX title and coming extremely close to taking the 250 National champion, I am convinced that Eli Tomac is next in line to be one of the great riders in motocross history. In moto two at High Point, he battled with Justin Barcia for second place, withstood the fury of roost from his teammate’s rear tire, then took off after leader Ken Roczen, which ended with ET making a truly incredible pass over a large roller. I’m thankful to live in the digital era, because my photos are at times ‘hit or miss,’ but I knew that I caught something good when the shutter closed.”

TransWorld Shadow : Nico Izzi at Steel City
September 6, 2012
Export, Pennsylvania

“Seeing Nico Izzi piece together a solid season after a devastating injury and a long string of bad luck was one of the highlights of the race season for me. His checkered past has created a polarizing reception with fans, but you cannot deny his talent. DOC has a knack for getting riders to open up on camera, and Nico did just that.”
