2014 Geneva SX | Night One Results
Night one of competition has just concluded at the 2o14 Geneva Supercross, where some of the sport’s best riders faced off inside the Palexpo Center in Switzerland. 2014 marks the twenty-ninth running of the famed off-season event, and this year’s roster of riders has Americans Malcolm Stewart, Josh Hill, Adam Cianciarulo, Kyle Chisholm, and Jimmy Decotis facing off against European talents like Marvin Musquin, Fabien Izord, and Cedric Soubeyras. Friday night saw plenty of action, and maybe a season-ending injury to one of the headlining riders, all of which has pulled plenty of attention to the overseas affair.
The biggest news of the night centers on Adam Cianciarulo, the young Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider competing in the SX2 (250) class. According to sources at the event, Cianciarulo experienced a violent crash at the end of a rhythm section inside the small arena, which shot his bike into a nearby wall and slammed the teenager into the ground. After a few tense moments of uncertainty with the paramedics, Cianciarulo was loaded onto a stretcher and carried to a nearby hospital with what appeared to be a shoulder injury. While accounts of the injury vary in the pit area, we’ve heard from a few people that he possibly suffered something similar to his Toronto rookie season ender. Kawasaki just released an update on Twitter, stating that AC will stay in the hospital overnight and head back to the States for further evaluation.
Unfortunately, Romain Berthome went down in the SX1 (450 class) main event and his crash caused the race to be red flagged. Unresponsive at first, he was taken of the course by medics, but this is the last we’ve heard of his status.
Marvin Musquin nabbed the night’s win in the 450 class, which a massive improvement to his performance earlier in the evening. Issues in the heat race kept him from qualifying directly to the main, but a win in the LCQ put the Red Bull KTM rider in the finals. Musquin felt pressure from Josh Hill early in the main, but Berthome’s red flagging causing crash sent the pack back behind the gate for another start. Another solid start put the French rider at the head of the pack and he motored on to the checkered flag with a massive margin of victory.
Cedric Soubeyras stayed up front for much of the main event, and although he could not catch Musquin, he kept the field at bay to take second place. Josh Hill was buried in the field after the second start, but he clawed through the pack to reach third place. As the laps clicked off, he became enthralled in a battle for position with Malcolm Stewart, with Stewart ultimately taking the spot.
