“I am determined for a top 20 finish” says best Brit Dakar rider, Mick Extance

Optoma Loans Honda Dakar rider, Mick Extance wooed the crowd at the annual Dirt Bike Show, Stoneleigh with his determination to continue his reign as the most successful British rider in the annual Dakar rally.

43 year old Extance from Spondon near Derby, unveiled his Honda CRF450X at the show as he enters the Dakar rally for the fifth time in January and aims to finish in the top 20.

“I have been committed to this race for five years; remortgaged my house twice and because of Dakar I haven’t spent a New Years Eve with my wife since we were married. The new Honda CRF450X looks amazing and it’s like an early Christmas present to have it here at the Show.

Mick first took part in the Dakar rally in 2002 and for the last three years was the top British rider in the race, coming 27th in 2006. He is also the first British entrant to complete 4 consecutive Dakar rallies.

The 2007 Dakar presents new challenges for all the riders and Mick is excited: “I can’t wait to get out there now, my year of training both here and abroad will come into its own. That said, if a desert rock has got your name on it and takes you out, it’s all over.

This year, Mick will be carrying a mini digital video camera for his regional news programme, BBC East Midlands Today to record his adventures as a video diary which will be broadcast on his return.
