On the eve of each SLAM Festival, we pull the industry’s riders from out of the office and hold three motos to determine which brand is the fastest in the sport. 2013 marked the fourth running of the TransWorld Motocross Industry Cup, and in that short time we have seen plenty of upset wins, new rivalries, and surprising speed for a line-up of “desk jockeys.” Coming into this year’s event, two-time and defending champions MSR were determined to take the Tretta-Motoda Cup back to the Corona Sport Group office, but their longtime adversaries FMF were poised to add their names to the trophy’s mantle. Neither could have predicted that the super-team field would usurp the win, but at the end of the three Motocross of Nations-style motos, that is exactly what had occurred.

MOTO ONE MX1/MX2

FMF’s Nick Evennou (MX2) and KTM’s Ryan Morais (MX1) led the field through the first obstacles of the Lake Elsinore course, and neither rider was willing to back down and settle for second place. Evennou, an ex-pro turned FMF marketing executive, kept close to Morais for a number of laps, but there was simply no catching the recently hired KTM staffer in his first race since his chilling Los Angeles crash in 2012. Watching Morais charge the course was as though he had never hung up his boots, and he went on to claim the moto win for his division.

This was not the only battle taking place between FMF and KTM racers, because just a tick back in the running order, KTM’s Mike Sleeter(MX2) and FMF’s Jeff Northrop (MX1) tussled for a spot higher in the order. Sleeter’s charge from a mediocre start was impressive and his aggression over each obstacle showed his determination to get to the front of the pack. Northrop settled into a steady pace and claimed second place in his division. Dirt Bike Magazine’s Mark Tilley (MX1) and Shift’s Joey Lancaster(MX2) claimed the final podium spots in their divisions, but scores by their teammates offset the finishes slightly. This allowed the MSR duo of Charles Castaloo (MX1) and Randy Valade (MX2) the opportunity to take their fifth and fourth place scores, respectively, in their classes.

MOTO TWO MX2/MX3

Sleeter and Evennou began another KTM/FMF battle for the lead at the very moment the gate hit the ground, with Evennou grabbing the early lead before another mid-moto charge by Sleeter. The KTM rider’s lap times were incredibly quick and he proceeded to gap the entire field by a massive margin. Sleeter’s teammate and fellow former pro, Casey Lytle, rode in a similar moto in his class and bested the competitors with laptimes roughly five seconds faster than anyone in the MX3 class. Nevertheless, MSR and FMF stayed close in the order with Nick McBride of MSR and Kyle Dangler of FMF rounding off the podium in the MX3 ranks and kept their team’s in contention for a top spot in the overall results.

MOTO THREE MX1/MX3

The KTM team jumped to the front of the field in the final moto of the day, with Morais and Lytle taking quick command of both classes. The two retired professional racers would claim easy victories over the competition, effectively sweeping every moto of the day and ending with a stunning five point tally. Split Designs’ Jesse Huntley shook up the running order with a second place finish in the MX1 class, but it was not enough to bring his team to the top three. MSR’s Nick McBride hammered away a second place in the MX3 class, while his teammate Charles Castaloo took fifth in the MX1 ranks, which would allow them to end up third overall. FMF’s Jeff Northrop and Kyle Dangler grabbed third place in their respective divisions and finished second overall for the fourth consecutive year.
