Malcolm Stewart has always been one of our favorite riders to hang out with at he track. His light-hearted demeanor and seemingly permanent good mood always make for a good interview, whether it concerns dirt bikes or not.

We are a month or so into the official off season. What have you been up to?

In my free time, I’ve just been fishing and working out and trying to catch up on the time with my family. But yeah fishing. A lot of it. I love fishing so much.

I saw on your Instagram that you recently did some ocean fishing. How different is that from fresh water fishing? Is it like Supercross and motocross; the same sport, but way different?

Oh yeah. It’s just like that. In the ocean, if something happens, no one is gonna save you. Ain’t nobody got time for that! [Laughs] I mean, sharks like to eat seals, and I look like a seal, so I guess I’m done for if my boat ever sinks out in the ocean! I ain’t gonna make it!

Is the technique different?

Yes, the technique is a lot different. In the ocean, you have to use a tighter line and you don’t really know what you’re gonna catch. You could hook onto a great white shark, or you could hook onto a little pin fish. You don’t know what you’re gonna get! But I’d say in the harbor you catch little fish that aren’t that big, but out in the open water, that’s when it gets crazy!

Do you eat what you catch, or are you a catch and release guy?

I am a catch and release guy. That’s what real fishermen do. I don’t eat fish anyway. Gross! I don’t like any seafood; it’s all nasty to me….fish, shrimp, scallops. So that’s why I release them; I won’t eat fish anyway! [Laughs]

Both Malcolm and James will be at the Red Bull Straight Rhythm in Pomona on October 4.

That’s your technique with the ladies, too…catch and release.

Oh yeah! You’ve gotta let them go, too! You keep them around too long, and you get locked in! Before you know it, there could be a couple little Mookies running around, and then it would be all over! Gotta catch and release the ladies…

S So how is it looking for a ride for 2015 and beyond. Any offers yet?

Well, I bought my Honda from TLD and I’m trying to do some stuff. But that’s it, sadly. I wish I could say that I was talking to some teams, but I’ve got nothing right now. That’s why I’ve been hash tagging #TeamStewart lately on Instagram, because that’s what it’s looking like. But you know what? At the end of the day I may not have a ride, but my Seven gear is gonna look on point!

What does the immediate future hold for you?

I’m looking forward to the Red Bull Straight Rhythm here in a couple weeks and I might do Monster Cup after that, but we’ll see. Hopefully, something comes up by then but if not, I’ll have to put a privateer effort together.
