Monday Kickstart Presented by One Industries – Houston SX

Round six of the Monster Energy Supercross series headed “east” for the first time this year, making a stop in Houston, Texas’ Reliant Stadium. The action on the track was exciting, as Team Honda’s Trey Canard got the first Supercross win of his career, and the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Championship got underway, with Geico Honda’s Justin Barcia earning the third win of his career. But you already know all of that, right? Here’s what you might have missed in the pits, and more…

Geico Honda's Kevin Windham led half of the main event before mis-timing a tricky rhythm section and going down hard. K-Dub stayed on the ground for a bit, but eventually walked off. Windham is banged up but otherwise okay, no doubt thanks in part to the safety equipment he chooses to wear. In addition to a high-quality Shoei VFX-W helmet, K-Dub couples his Leatt Brace with the new Leatt Chest Protector, which he wears underneath his jersey.

Houston marked the return of Dean Wilson. Now in his sophomore Supercross LItes season, Dean-O is one of the crown favorites, for sure. In the SX LItes main, he battled tooth-in-nail with winner Justin Barcia. "This week, I am gonna go to the track with Hanny and practice block passing," he said, after finishing second in the main. "I've got to get my aggression level up, because right now I am Barcia's bitch." Check out this week's "How Was Your Weekend?" videos for more!

Motoconcepts Yamaha rider Vince Friese and his mechanic Eddie Laret wait as Dunlop techs install new rubber on Friese's wheels. "The track is hard underneath, but has some slippery, skatey stuff on top," said Friese, who finished 17th in the main. In Houston, many riders chose a hard-terrain MX71 up front, and a intermediate MX51 out back.

James Stewart had a night he'd rather forget in Houston. After being involved in a huge turn one pileup, Stewart suffered a second crash when he came into contact with Jason Thomas' rear tire. Thomas bobbled in a tricky rhythym section and crossed into Stewart's line, leaving the San Manuel Yamaha rider nowhere to go, as he was already airborn. While Thomas retired with a potential knee injury, Stewart remounted and struggled to 15th with a bent front brake rotor.

Interesting fact from Jason McCune from Leatt Brace: while many riders love the new GPX Pro for its light weight and greater brace-to-helmet clearance, Kevin Windham chooses to stick with the original version, with the brace adjusted all the way up, so that his helmet comes into contact with it more often. "Kevin says that he likes the secure feeling of having the brace there," said Hapa. "He likes to be able to look up, and feel the back of his helmet stop."

The Geico Honda pits had a different look, and Blake Wharton and Justin Barcia's bikes replaced Eli Tomac and Jimmy Decotis'. While Barcia scored a solid win for the team, Wharton ran strong in third until the twilight stages of the main event, when he and Ryan Sipes came together and crashed out of podium contention. Still, Wharton salvaged seventh.

Scott bikes are becoming the norm inside the pits for warm-up. Until recently, Specialized, Orbea, and even FMF BMX cruisers have been the mainstay for pre-practice spinning, but now that Scott bikes are easier to get in the States, they are showing up more and more.

Malcolm Stewart made his professional debut this weekend, and despite the shadow cast from his big brother, Malcolm attracted plenty of fan and media attention. After a brilliant heat race where he finished second, he won the holeshot in the main event, only to wrecked minutes into the race and destroyed his chance of running up front. However, he showed that he is a contender, so expect to see a lot more of him in the coming east coast races.

Ken Roczen made the temporary jump to the premiere class while West Coast Lites took their first short hiatus from racing. He will return to San Diego to race the 250 again, then it's off to Europe to begin racing in the MX2 Championship. There is no doubt Kenny has the busiest and diverse schedule in racing.

Darryn Durham reminded everyone of his speed in the second Lites heat race. He snagged the holeshot and fought off the advances of Dean Wilson. It looked as though he'd take the win, but some mistiming left the door open for Wilson, and Durham would have to settle for third.

Keep an eye out for Hinson engine plugs. With the integrated clutch covers on the new CRF250Rs, Hinson was all but required to create one for the red thumper. And with the added request for more from the Geico Honda team, Hinson has delivered (shown here on Windham's 450).

Izoird has two titles in both the French Supercross Championship and European Supercross Championship. He raced the AMA Supercross class last year before his season started in Europe, making five out of six main events aboard a Kawasaki. Unfortunately, he failed to make this main this weekend in the highly competitive class, but keep an eye out for him in the coming weeks.

Before the season got started, most fans would have guessed that Justin Barcia's and Dean Wilson's rivalry would mature, and they would likely battle week after week. So far, this is exactly the case. These two put in an amazing battle for the fans for nearly all 15 laps of the main event. Expect this rivalry to get dirty.

In front of a plethora of family and hometown fans, Kevin Windham jumped out to an early lead in the 450 main event, and looked as if he would settle in and grab a win. It all came crashing down, however, when K-Dub got crossed up after coming up a bit short in a table-table transition. He violently crashed and was carted off the track by the Asterisk crew. Get well soon Kevin!
