Monday Kickstart Presented by ONE Industries – Steel City

The penultimate round of the Outdoor Nationals delivered some of the best racing of the season. Even though the 450 title is already wrapped up, that has not dulled the competition in the class. With the 250 Class and WMX titles still on the line, the action was intense to say the least. As we head into the final round this weekend at the first ever Pala National, Christophe Pourcel leads Trey Canard by a mere seven points. Jessica Patterson has a slightly more comfortable cushion on Ashley Fiolek, but it would still only take one bad moto to turn the championships in either class around. For now, here is a behind the scenes look at Steel City.

MotoConcepts/Yamaha's Ryan Sipes set the fastest lap time in practice, which enough to put a smile on any rider's face. Unfortunately Ryan was unable to transfer that speed into a solid finish as a crash in the second moto forced him to work his way back up through the pack. Still, his 6-19 scores were good enough for 13th overall.

Sebastien Tortelli was spotted hanging out in the pits, mainly in the Honda camp. The former World Champ recently returned from a celebrity race in Mexico with the likes of Stefan Everts, David Vuillemin, and Doug Dubach, among others.

As you have probably heard Tim Ferry has been working with Trey Canard since about the midway through the season and the results have obviously been paying off.

Europe seems to have a few more neck brace options than what is available to far in the U.S. This Ortema brace worn by Gareth Swanepoel is extremely lightweight. However, the unit is also far more flexible than the current offerings we are familiar with.

You better believe K-Dub was a happy camper after his win. The Red Bull Honda rider has not won an overall since 2007. K-Dub was the crowd favorite.

The riders and fans keep getting more and more into the podium celebrations. There's nothing like getting spraying with champagne when you are already covered in dirt.

Nick Paluzzi made his pro racing debut at Steel City aboard Josh Grant's vacated Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGR/Yamaha YZ450F. The former amateur standout was impressive, especially considering he is riding completely unfamiliar equipment. 10-8 moto scores netted Paluzzi seventh overall in the premier class. Not bad at all.

The racing in Steel City was excellent. Nearly every moto had a close battle for the lead and these two helped kick off the excitement with their back and forth racing in the first 450 moto.

Broc Tickle has been rocking some cool custom lids lately. This Unit designed paint job is fairly straight forwards but sometimes simple is best.

Check out the custom notches on Christophe Pourcel's rear tire. Done by Dunlop, the cuts allow each knob to splay out under pressure, creating a wider surface area and more traction.

Nico Izzi has been going through a tough year but seems to be turning things around a bit. The DNA/Shred Stix/Yamaha rider ran with the lead pack in the first moto, eventually finishing sixth. The second moto began great, after nearly grabbing the holeshot. Unfortunately that was short lived as a crash took Nico out of the race.

Dean Wilson had his worst race of the year in the first moto. A fall on the first lap was followed up by a crash on lap three that dropped Wilson all the way back to 40th. From there the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki pilot was slow to get going again but was eventually able to work his way up to 17th.

"Jammin" Jimmy Weinert was roaming around the pits all day in support of a few riders he has been helping out. The 1970's MX legend is never short of words and let us know that he is helping to open a new motocross training facility right next to the famous South of the Border rest stop off of I-95 between North and South Carolina. Hmm, does Pedro ride moto?

Cole Seely was having his best race of the season in the first moto, running in fourth place for the first 25 minutes until a crash dropped him back to 11th in the closing laps. Cole is one of those talents just waiting for a breakout ride, and he almost had it at Steel City.

If you didn't think Wil Hahn was really injured, he has the scars to prove it. His recent shoulder surgery on his left shoulder was nearly the same as his right shoulder from last season. But that hasn't slowed down the Lucas Oil/TLD/Honda rider one bit. A fourth overall at Southwick was followed up by a fifth in the first moto at Southwick are not a bad way to return from injury.

Ben Townley has had some up and down races recently. During the first moto, Ben was hit in the face with a rock and suffered a broken nose in the opening laps. But that didn't slow the TLD rider one bit. He still went onto finish the moto in third only to be taken down in the first turn of moto two.

Tarah Geiger is having a solid year in 2010, consistently finishing on the podium. Steel City saw her finish just off the box but the Lucas Oil/TLD/Honda rider still sits third in series points.

World Motocross GP rider Gareth Swanepoel came over to the States to do the last three Nationals under the DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha tent. Although the South African hasn't ridden a 250F for quite some time, he has finished quite well so far considering his limited time on the bike. His 13-12 moto scores were good enough for 12th overall.

The first practices were a little sloppy, as the track was a little overwatered, making clean up a nightmare for mechanics between practice sessions. By the second practice, however, the track had broken in significantly and riders were able to lay down some fast laps.

Jason Lawrence not only showed up and qualified at Steel City, but he actually raced as well. Fans were quick to find Jason in the pits and as soon as he made an appearance by the race rig, he was getting autograph requests.

Charles Marchent has been helping out Sherri Cruse this season but the former Star Racing mechanic is spending most of his days in a regular bike shop in Arizona. But life in the shop isn't quite like life on the rode and Charles is itching to get back onto the circuit.

There is an open spot on the door to the Pro Circuit rig just waiting to be filled. If all goes according to plan next weekend, it will not be long before you see another number one plate up there.

Shane Durham, brother to Darryn, was another rider making his pro debut at Steel City, as the Pennsylvania native lives nearby. Shane pitted out of the Honda of Troy rig, but he more than simply rides for the team, the 19 year old is also one of the team's motor builders. In racing, Durham went 16-24 for 20th overall. Not bad for a kid with full-time job.

In the second practice, Jason Lawrence chose to wear a Josh Hill jersey in honor of his injured buddy. Of course, a few sponsor logos had to be covered over but it was a nice gesture.

It's a good thing Ryan Dungey wrapped up his title last weekend, because he never even completed a full lap of the first moto at Steel City. A collision with another rider damaged Ryan's front brake to the point that he could not continue the race. With little energy spent, Ryan redeemed himself in the second moto.

Riding without goggles sucks. Doing it for an entire pro moto is hell. Justin Brayton ditched his goggles in the opening laps of the first moto and spent the rest of the time just trying not to lose an eye. He came away with a fifth place finish.

Tommy Hahn won this round last year and was certainly hoping for a repeat performance, but it was not to be. The Rockstar/Suzuki rider dropped out of racing before the day was through.

When Kevin Windham is on, the rest of the riders better watch out. The lanky rider's smooth style is right out of the riding textbook. Ever heard about keeping your head over the handlebars? K-Dub has.

The crowd at Steel City was a good size but still a little smaller than some of the more recent rounds. Threatening weather likely kept some fans away but those in attendance were more than excited to see some good racing and they let the riders know it.

Like we said, J-Law actually raced at Steel City, and believe it or not, was awarded the Muscle Milk Recovery award for his finishes. After crashing several times in the first moto, Jason rode a little better the second time around for 15th place and 19th overall.

Dean Wilson started the second moto on the exact opposite end of the spectrum than his first moto: out front. He rode out front for the majority of the race until the final two laps when Trey Canard and Christophe Pourcel both got around him.

Amateur standout, Gannon Audette, is one of the riders who opted out of making his debut this year in the Nationals. However, the Georgia native was on hand at Steel City checking out the scene. Let's just say he was spending an awful lot of time hanging out with the DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha crew.
