With a break from the 2015 Monster Energy Supercross Series and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship on the horizon, nearly every rider will be buzzing around the Southern California test tracks this week to prepare for the summer of racing. Yesterday we paid a visit to the recently reopened Pala Raceway, where defending class champions Jeremy Martin and Ken Roczen put in laps under the watchful eyes of their team technicians. A handful of fellow pros joined them on the packed track (Arnaud Tonus, Joey Savatgy, Anthony Rodriguez, Brett Metcalfe, and Ivan Tedesco), making for a mock National of sorts. Thursday may be the true test because it sounds like nearly everyone will be taking to the hills of Glen Helen. If you can get there to watch, it’d be worth spending the day in the San Bernardino sun.
Tuesday marked Arnaud Tonus’s first day back on the bike, as a sudden illness sent the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider back to Europe for an intense recuperation process. The Swiss rider is expected to the a threat in the summer series.
Anthony Rodriguez will spend just this week in SoCal with the Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha team, as his usual program consists of riding at Georgia’s Millsaps Training Facility. Injuries plagued A-Rod in his rookie season, but things seem to be much smoother in 2015.
Brett Metcalfe will return to Canada this year to race with Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki, the team he claimed the championship with in 2013. We’ll have more on Metty later today…
Ryan Morais is one of the many key test riders for KTM, but we think he’s putting in more hours than the “9 to 5” patch on the back of his FOX pants states. On Tuesday, he helped the BTO Sports KTM team and WP, switching between the all-new air shock and a traditional spring setup during motos.
This was Ken Roczen’s second day on the bike after recovering from an injury to his left ankle, but the defending 450 National champion already seemed up to speed on the RCH/Soaring Eagle/Jimmy John’s/Suzuki Factory Racing bike. Check back for a video with Ken by our Video Editor, Jordan Powell.
Now retired from racing, Ivan Tedesco serves as the chief test rider for the RCH/Soaring Eagle/Jimmy John’s/Suzuki Factory Racing team. IT9 has been working on an outdoor base setup for the team for weeks while Ken Roczen and Broc Tickle focus on Supercross.
Joey Savatgy joined the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team in SoCal as well, clicking off laps for suspension testing with Bones Bacon. Keep an eye on Savatgy through the next few months, he could put in a breakout season.
Don’t get too familiar with the plain plates, because Jeremy Martin’s Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha will soon be complete with number one backgrounds soon enough to recognize his status as defending 250 National champion.
