Cycles 128, Beverly, MA. Sunday, November 12th, 2006.

The Masters of Mini war cry is “Do you have what it takes to survive? and this past Sunday it wasn’t just a motto — it was a serious question. You see, the forecast for five days going in to the event was for an 80% chance of pouring rain on race day. Since no one pre entered there were discussions of changing the date to avoid the almost certain monsoon approaching the Northeastern seaboard. The challenge was that due to a busy holiday season approaching, there were not any other available dates to hold the event. So the event was happening — Rain or Shine!

Well, it rained. A lot! But slowly but surely the riders showed up anyway. In fact, round 3 boasted 145 entries with everyone signing up on race day. Incredible.

But this was no ordinary race, it was the “Cycles race. Cycles 128 has hosted an asphalt race in their back parking lot for many years. It was a favorite in New England and New Englanders are very loyal. General Manager John Rice and crew laid out the course a week prior to the event and tested it and re tested it until they got it right, just like they do every year. Author note — it seems like a really cool place to work!

The rain didn’t make anyone hold back either. This was a short course with multiple lines to pass which made for tight racing. With bragging rights and a few prizes on the line (something about a trip to Vegas and entry in the Mini Moto SX) everyone there went for it.
