New Zealand’s Katherine Prumm used the break in between rounds two and three of the Hitachi AMA/WMA National Motocross Championship to heal up, and the Kawasaki rider made a victorious return to the United States at the Lakewood, Colorado, round of the WMA National Championship Series.

For Prumm—who won the first three motos of the season before crashing and breaking her hand in the second moto at Hangtown—the win came relatively easy after her biggest competition crashed out of the first moto. Defending WMA Champion Jessica Patterson found herself on the ground after battling her way to the front of the pack in moto one, and the Moto XXX rider was only able to charge back to seventh by the end of the first moto. Prumm, meanwhile, battled early on with Richardson’s RV rider Tarah Gieger and Patterson before taking over when the two leaders collided, sending Patterson off the track and onto the ground. Once into the lead, Prumm pulled comfortably away from the competition, earning her fourth moto win in five tries.

Gieger held down second for much of the race, but slowed in the closing stages and allowed a hard-charging Alisa Nix to sneak past. Another New Zealander—former WMA Champ Tania Satchwell—finished a solid fourth after running as far back as seventh. Georgian Leah Cantrell rounded out the top five.

In the second moto, Patterson assumed control of the lead and was anxious to prove a point after being taken down in the first go-round. Prumm settled into second, knowing well that it was good enough for the overall victory, while Gieger again crossed the finish line third aboard her Bill Gieger-tuned Yamaha YZ250F. Nix was fourth in the final moto, leading Cantrell and Jessye Davis across the finish line.

While Prumm’s 1-2 scores were good enough for the overall, Gieger’s consistent 3-3 showing earned her the second spot on the podium. Third went to Northern California rider Nix. Thanks to her moto two win, Patterson was able to earn fourth overall, but the Floridian still lost control of the series points lead. Prumm leads the charge with two rounds to go, 126-122 over Patterson.
