Team Honda’s Ricky Carmichael, last years’s 250cc champion, earned his second victory of the season in EA SPORTS Supercross Presented by Speed Stick at Edison International Field. Brock Sellards, who rides for Red Bull/KTM, won his second-career 125cc supercross main event in front of the third sold out event at Edison International Field (45,050 fans) in the 2002 season.
For the second-consecutive week, Team Bud Light Yamaha’s Jeremy McGrath earned the $1,500 PowerAde Holeshot Award. After the first turn, StephaneRoncada and Jean Sebastian-Roy chased McGrath, the winner of 72-career 250cc supercross wins. On lap four, while riding in third place, Team SobeSuzuki’s Travis Pastrana went down and dropped back in the pack.
On lap 10, Carmichael tripled over McGrath, who was forced to double the section after he bobbled on the whoops preceeding the jumps, to take over the lead. In second place, McGrath and Roncadascraped plastic for several laps before Roncada made a pass that would position him in second place until the checkered flag was dropped. From that point on, McGrath threw out the anchor and faded to an eventual sixth.
Back in the pack, points leader David Vuillemin and Mike LaRocco made a late-race charge to finish third and fourth respectively. Carmichael wonhis second race of the season, his 17th of his career.
“I feel like I am getting in my groove,” said Carmichael. A good start is what it takes to get a win out here. Everything is going great right now,and the competition has really stepped it up. If you are not out front early, it’s game over. I will go home this week, where I feel comfortable.I hope I have an advantage on the East Coast.”
Team Red Bull/KTM’s Brock Sellards blitzed through the first turn, earning the 1,000 PowerAde Holeshot Award in the 125cc Western Regional Supercrosschampionship, with Danny Smith and James Stewart in tow. Smith went down three turns later, collecting Stewart and others in the crash. The incidentleft Stewart, who leads the circuit in points, in 21st place. By lap four he had moved into 10th place.
Out front, Honda’s Chris Gosselaar and Red Bull/KTM rider Billy Laninovich were chasing Sellards. On lap nine, while riding in fifth place, he went down in a corner and ended all hopes of picking up his third win on the season. Sellards held on for the win, the second of his career. Gosselaar was second and Billy Laninovich was third. Stewart was 11th, his worst finish of the year.
“Last week I was riding good and (James) Stewart took me out, which was frustrating, but this weekend I turned it around and won my first event,”Sellards said. “I could hear everyone cheering out there, even though it may not have been for me.”
