Stacking The Deck: 2013 Monster Energy Cup Practice Report

A full day of qualifying has concluded on the outskirts of Las Vegas, Nevada, at Sam Boyd Stadium for the 2013 Monster Energy Cup. A number of classes fill the race order, from the open pro class, the Amateur All-Stars, SuperMini, and the KJSC, all of which have put in plenty of laps of practice to figure out the long and challenge Ricky Carmichael-designed course. A standard sunny desert afternoon cooked the hard packed soil, but the Dirt Wurx track crew will have plenty of time to make it race-ready for tonight's main events.

Monster Energy Cup Class

Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto has the Monster Energy Cup course mastered, and claimed the fastest time of the afternoon with a 1:08.041 lap. MEC rookie James Stewart was a close second aboard his Yoshimura Suzuki, timing just .114 seconds off of RV's lap. Another racer making his first appearance at the off-season event, Red Bull KTM's Ken Roczen, nabbed a solid third place spot on the charts. The top eight racers on the charts all ran in the 1:08 range, an indication of how close the racing action can be.

Amateur All-Star Class

AMSOIL/Factory Connection Honda racer Jordon Smith was the fastest of the A and B amateur racers, and his consistent lap times in the 1:11 range were never matched by the rest of the field. RJ Hampshire ran a close pace, less than a half second off of Smith's, and returning racer Paul Coates claimed the third fastest time. Because most amateur racers are not familiar with the rhythm needed to master an Supercross course, there is a marked difference in times deeper in the results.

Amateur All-Star Class Qualifying Results

1. Jordon Smith 1:11.769
2. RJ Hampshire 1;12.186
3. Paul Coates 1:12.756
4. Thomas Covington 1:12.822
5. Justin Hoeft 1:12.827

SuperMini Class

Michael Mosiman bested defending SuperMini champion Austin Forkner in timed qualifying, and the two young racers were running a nearly identical pace and style on the massive course. The two riders bested third place qualifier Chase Sexton by over a second per lap. During an earlier session, Sean Cantrell was at the top of the charts, but soon after posting a quick lap, the Team Green rider suffered a vicious crash and is a question mark for tonight's race. Regardless, Cantrell's time was still fourth fastest of the afternoon.

A handful of SuperMini riders have launched the massive triple that leads into Monster Alley, and mastering the daunting jump is key to climbing up the results.

SuperMini Class Qualifying Results

1. Michael Mosiman 1:16.786
2. Austin Forkner 1:16.885
3. Chase Sexton 1:18.109
4. Sean Cantrell 1:18.298
5. Mitchell Falk 1:18.664
