The 2015 Lille SX has come to a close after a second night of racing at the massive Stade Pierre-Mauroy venue in Northern France. While the horrific events that occurred Friday night in nearby Paris were still on the minds of everyone in the country, it was not enough to stop fans from filling the seats and riders from taking to the track. Sunday’s format was identical to Saturday (SX1 class with two heats, an LCQ, SuperPole fast lap session for main event gate pick, and finally a main vent) and plenty of action filled the numerous laps that took place on the very technical course.
Christophe Pourcel showed incredible speed throughout the day on his Rockstar Energy Racing Husqvarna by setting the fastest laps in both timed practice and the SuperPole portion. The cunning rider managed to avoid the carnage of the opening lap in the main event and snuck off with the lead unchallenged. For eighteen laps Pourcel set the pace and brought the French crowd to their feet, and when he crossed the finish line just ahead of Weston Peick, the building erupted into applause.
Although Pourcel claimed the main event win, Peick was truly the victor of the weekend. The AutoTrader.com/Toyota/Yamaha rider bounced back from a small slide-out in his heat race to dominate the LCQ, then steadily climbed up the running order from mid-pack to second place in the feature thanks in part to the numerous crashes by competitors. Cooper Webb’s hard get-off was ultimately what helped Peick clinch the King of Lille title; the Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha rider was in the process of catching Pourcel for the lead when a mistake in a tricky rhythm section sent him to the ground. Webb was able to rejoin the race and finished in fifth place.
Smart moves helped Supercross veteran Fabien Izoird complete the main event podium on Sunday night. In addition to this, the consistent finishes by the numerous French riders allowed the hosting country to earn the “Nations” victory over America.
Malcolm Stewart’s night took a turn for the worse in the main event. The GEICO Honda rider seemed set for success after a hard-earned heat race win over Dylan Ferrandis and was in the front group during the main event until an error on a troublesome jump resulted in a full somersault. The impact destroyed the motorcycle, as it snapped the subframe in half and forced Stewart to withdrawal.
Ferrandis also experienced issues in the main event with a crash in the whoops on the opening lap sent his Monster Energy Kawasaki machine flying through the air. With bike and body in one piece, the young French rider rejoined the the race and crossed the finish line in tenth place.
