The 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship continued on with round nine taking place at Washougal MX Park. A staple of the pro circuit, the Washington track challenged riders with deceivingly slick soil and massive, shadow-casting trees which have become even more difficult with the day’s persistent rain. As we prepare for the final few motos of the year, the importance of each lap intensifies. The 250 class title is solely between Jeremy Martin and Marvin Musquin, but Cooper Webb has come into play as a spoiler that has kept them from scoring every point possible.

250 Moto One

Christian Craig avoided the opening lap carnage by claiming the holeshot in the day's first muddy moto. Cooper Webb and Marvin Musquin followed the GEICO Honda rider through the opening laps and were the first to take advantage of Craig's tip-over in a turn. Webb's wide-open riding style worked surprisingly well on the slick, sloppy track and he led Musquin by over four seconds at the halfway point of the moto. But in the final minutes of the race Musquin's controlled technique allowed him to chopped Webb's lead, and this put the two riders head-to-head at the most critical moments of the moto. Musquin managed to move into the lead in the final minutes of the race, but Webb refused to fall off the pace and stayed on his rear fender. The final laps were tense, as the two goggle-less riders stayed within feet of each other until the checkered flag, with Musquin taking the win.

Arnaud Tonus was the biggest surprise of the 250 moto, as this marked the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider outdoor debut on American soil. A solid start to put the Swiss rider near the front of the pack and his GP skills were put to use on the technical Washougal soil. He was scored third at the conclusion of the race.

A poor start buried Jeremy Martin in the field and the Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha rider spent the entire race climbing back through the pack. He eventually finished the moto in ninth, but when combined with Musquin's second place finish, drastically closed the gap between the two in the season championship.

250 Moto Two

Cooper Webb and Jeremy Martin jumped to the front of the pack at the start of the second moto, and the Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha teammates were rarely apart for the rest of race. Webb set the pace in the opening laps and was eager to make up for his first moto performance, which was visible in his attack of the track. But in the final ten-minutes of the moto, Martin upped the intensity and destroyed Webb's small advantage. A fast descent down one of the many tree-lined hills moved Martin into the lead, and he seemed set to run off with the moto win. Moments later, Martin made a simple mistake, which put him on the ground and Webb back into the lead. Webb maintained a steady pace through the final laps to score both the moto win and overall victory.

Marvin Musquin spent much of the moto lurking behind the teammates in third place, but the Red Bull KTM rider was unable to mount a charge and challenege them for the positions. His finish put him second overall on the day and brought the championship point difference between he and Martin to just four markers.

Aaron Plessinger rode well through the day's two motos, with 5-4 scores in both races that were far more consistent than other competitors. The Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha rookie was rewarded for his efforts with a third place overall finish.
