Just before the gates dropped for the first motos at the 2016 Unadilla MX, the AMA announced the three riders that will represent the United States at the 2016 Motocross of Nations in Maggiora, Italy. As expected Cooper Webb will serve as Team Captain in the MX1 division and Alex Martin will fill the MX2 slot, while Jason Anderson will be the surprise entry for the Open class.
Finding three willing riders was a bit of challenge this year, with so many on the sidelines with injuries and others saddled with commitments to other off-season events. In fact, Eli Tomac turned down the offer to race and citied his busy schedule as the reason (the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider will contest the two MXGP rounds in the US in September, then the Monster Energy Cup in October).
This will mark Webb’s second appearance at the Motocross of Nations, and he will again be aboard a Factory Yamaha YZ450F. The last few weeks have been eventful for the Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha rider, as it was announced he will move to the 450 class in 2017 with the newly reformed Factory Yamaha effort alongside Chad Reed and is set to clinch his first 250 Motocross National championship.
Martin is no stranger to the MXON. He raced the 2014 event in Latvia as a part of Team Puerto Rico (because of Puerto Rico is a territory of the US, American racers can compete for the country at the MXON) and this will be his first trip over as an official US entry. The Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha rider is currently having a career-best season and is tied for second place overall in the 250 championship standings.
Jason Anderson has been absent for much of the summer due to a shoulder injury, yet his speed through the early part of the season and willingness to race made him an easy choice for the Open class position. The Rockstar Energy Racing Husqvarna rider has never raced the Motocross of Nations before, but is familiar with other overseas events. Two weeks after the MXON he will represent Husqvarna at the first-ever Supermotocross Riders Cup in Germany, alongside MXGP racer Max Nagl and fellow American Zach Osborne.
The 2016 Motocross of Nations will take place at Maggiora, Italy, on September 24-25th.
