The GEICO Honda team has issued an update on rider RJ Hampshire after his Heat Race crash at the 2018 Daytona Supercross. A miscue in a very high-speed section of the track resulted in Hampshire slamming into the ground and required the assistance of the Alpinestars Mobile Medical staff. Because of Hampshire’s position on the track and the immediate need for medics to remove him, the race was red flagged and deemed complete. Once off of the track, Hampshire was transported to a local hospital for a full evaluation.
In an Instagram post, the GEICO Honda team stated that Hampshire sustained breaks to a rib and a possible shoulder injury, along with stable fractures to the T3 and T4 vertebras (thoracic vertebras, located in the middle of the spinal column). Luckily, none of the injuries require surgery and the vertebral fractures did not damage the spinal cord.
UPDATE MARCH 12TH 10:10 AM | RJ Hampshire has shared an update on his injuries Monday morning and confirmed that no surgeries will be needed to repair the damage. This is a massive improvement considering the initial concerns from Saturday night and Hampshire ended the post by stating that with a little rest he should be able to line up for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
I felt good on the bike all day yesterday. Had some pretty good speed and my foot just slid off hitting my shifter in those rollers during that heat race. After seeing the pictures from the crash I'm very thankful I didn't take that shot to my head. I have some fractures in my T3/T4 in my back and ribs. Also have some damage to my lungs which is why I'll be spending a couple nights in the hospital. I'll be getting some more check ups this week on the shoulder also. Just want to thank my team @fchonda mechanics @kjc_fitted @macfarlane182 and my girl @_ashley_murphyy , we had big improvements from last year and pretty bummed to end the season early. I'll update everyone when I hear more !
