We have learned more about the crash that Justin Bogle suffered in the 450 Heat Race at the 2018 San Diego Supercross. While near the front of the pack on the opening lap, the AutoTrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing rider did not hit the first large triple in the track layout and rolled over the landing of the jump just as Ben Lamay, who did jump the triple, started his descent. Lamay’s tire hit the side of Bogle’s helmet, evident in tire marks that team manager Jeremy Albrecht said were on the side of the shell, and then hit Bogle’s body. The two went off of the track and into a nearby wall, with Bogle getting the worst of the impact, and the level of the care required from the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit staff resulted in a red flag.

In talking with Albrecht, Bogle suffered a break to the humerus/upper arm in the crash, and that was the most important injury that they addressed. Bogle reportedly did not suffer a concussion in the crash, a relief considering that back-to-back concussions were the reason he missed the start of the year.

Bogle will undergo a further evaluation this week to determine the extent of the damage and a timeframe for recovery.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 11TH 7:30 PM | Bogle has posted an update on Twitter that confirms he will need to undergo surgery on Monday to repair the damage to his arm. The tweet said, “Man this sport can be so trying sometimes. But I love it and I love the person these struggles turn me into. Surgery to fix me up tomorrow then go from there but I know I can overcome anything placed before me and I will work and pray til this ones no different #yungnoquit”

UPDATE FEBRUARY 13TH 11:51 AM | Bogle has posted another update to his Instagram account and the AutoTrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing team have issued a full press release about their plans for Bogle’s spot on the team. Bogle said that he underwent surgery on Monday and a plate and screws were installed to repair the broken humerus bone and that he also has a fracture in his L2 (lumbar) vertebra. Despite the damage, he remained positive in the post and stated that he will soon begin physical therapy.

The AutoTrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing team have confirmed that Malcolm Stewart will remain on the team in Bogle’s absence, in the press release posted in full below.

Autotrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing Team rider Justin Bogle sustained a broken right arm during the opening lap of the second 450 heat race at the San Diego Supercross. The RM-Z450 rider successfully underwent surgery on Monday and is on the road to recovery.

Autotrader/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing team manager, Jeremy Albrecht, provided further details. "Bogle was making progress throughout the day in San Diego. Unfortunately, he was landed on by another rider and sustained a break to his right humerus. He was transported to a local hospital for observation.

On Monday, Justin underwent what his surgeons, Dr. Tal David and Dr. Christopher Sherman are calling a successful surgery, which included fixing the injury with two plates and screws. As far as a timeline for Bogle's return, Albrecht stated, "We will have a better idea once Justin heals up from surgery and resumes daily activities. Malcolm Stewart will continue racing for the team while Bogle is sidelined."
