After a soggy start to the new season, the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross Series has moved east to Arizona for round two, the 2019 Glendale Supercross. Thanks to the unique design of State Farm Stadium and its one wide-open end zone, the Dirt Wurx crew was able to build a massive track with a rhythm section that's over one hundred yards long, a wide-open flat straight, challenging whoops, and a handful of big bowl turns. Riders spent the afternoon learning the layout and a look at the final results from Timed Qualifying have us eager for the night's racing.
The pace of both the 250 and 450 classes was remarkably close through the day and a look at the final results shows just fractions of a second could be the deciding factor in the Main Events.
250 CLASS QUALIFYING REPORT
Although Dylan Ferrandis dominated both sessions for the 250 class, his riding style and awareness might be more impressive than his speed. The Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha rider looked laidback on the track in session one, but was the only rider in the 1:01-range at the time. When a rider went down and blocked the landing of the end zone triple during the second session, Ferrandis eased his pace for a bit and waited until the track was clear before he went back to full speed. In the end, Ferrandis nabbed the top spot with a 1:01.270 time.
Adam Cianciarulo seems adamant to put his eventful opening round behind him. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider was one of the fastest riders of the 250 class through the afternoon and traded the top of the board with Ferrandis a few times in the final session. Cianciarulo's best lap was a 1:01.286, which put him second overall.
With his win at Anaheim One, Colt Nichols comes into the weekend as the 250 championship lead and with the red plates on his Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha. Out to show that his win wasn't a fluke, Nichols quietly clocked the third fastest lap of the 250 class, a 1:01.470.
RJ Hampshire was left out of many people's preseason predictions for the 250 West Coast series, but the GEICO Honda rider might wind up being a big surprise. Hampshire was fourth fastest overall with a 1:01.773 time, the last of just four riders in the 1:01-range for the 250 class.
Just like last week, JGRMX/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing's Jimmy Decotis got into the mix for a top-five qualifying time with a 1:02.399.
450 CLASS QUALIFYING REPORT
The jump-laden track suited Justin Hill and in the waning moments of the final 450 qualifying session, the JGRMX/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing rider posted a 1:00.659 lap time.
Looks like Cooper Webb's Anaheim One speed wasn't just because of the mud. Just before the checkered flag flew in the final practice, the Red Bull KTM rider put in a 1:00.887 lap time and snagged second place on the scoreboard.
After a midpack time in the first session of the day, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Eli Tomac found his flow for the second session. With a 1:00.890 time, Tomac was third fastest in the 450 class.
Marvin Musquin was quietly in contention for a top time throughout the day, as the Red Bull KTM rider was ranked in the top-five through both sessions. In the end, a 1:00.977 put him fourth overall.
Jason Anderson's finish at Anaheim One had many wondering if something was amiss with the defending 450 class champion, but the Rockstar Energy Racing Husqvarna rider was in the mix during both qualifying sessions at round two. Anderson held the fastest lap in the first session and then settled into fifth overall with a 1:01.062.
Malcolm Stewart was one to watch through the day, as the SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts/Honda rider was the fastest in free practice session and was in the top-five for much of the final session until the late charges by Hill and Webb.
