For the second year in a row, pedal-assist mountain bikes were included in the race program at the annual Sea Otter Classic, a massive mountain bike festival held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. The HaiBike eMTB Race Powered by Bosch attracted around 100 entrants aboard a wide variety of pedal-assist mountain bikes. Troy Lee himself is a huge advocate of the new wave of pedal-assist mountain bikes, and as an ambassador for the Specialized Turbo Levo himself, he and Troy Lee Designs served as associate sponsors of the second-annual event.

The race course consisted of three miles of undulating terrain varying from pavement on the famed Laguna Seca Raceway road course, to gravel pits, to singletrack trails and rock sections, and racers were required to complete four full laps. Cole Bumen earned the overall win from the front row, while KTM Bicycle Industries’ Trevor DeRuise came through the pack from the last row to win the Industry Challenge class and finish second overall.

TransWorld Motocross’ own Doni Wilson and Dominic Gaytan also took part in the event, and the smiles on their faces made it clear that this type of racing is both a blast and here to stay.
