Justin Barcia In For SMX Cup

Late addition to Yamaha squad

2016 Ironman MX | Monday Kickstart_010

During a recent “How Was Your Weekend” interview with Justin Barcia, the topic of the 2016 Monster Energy Supermotocross Riders Cup came up. The Autotrader.com/Monster Energy/Toyota/Yamaha rider told us there was a chance that he’d make the trip to Germany for the first-ever running of the event, but this came just hours after Yamaha had announced their three-man squad of Benoit Paturel, Brent Van Doninck, and Romain Febvre. Knowing that, we both figured he was off the list.

Never mind that, because Yamaha announced at the 2016 MXGP of the Americas at Charlotte Motor Speedway that Barcia has been added as a fourth rider to the squad. The format of the new event allows for a four-rider team, with three riders and one possible “wild card.” We’ll talk more with Barcia about this later in the weekend.

With Barcia’s involvement, this ups US participation at the event a little more. Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin will join Jeffrey Herlings at KTM, while Jason Anderson and Zach Osborne join Max Nagl for Husqvarna.

Here’s the full press release from Yamaha’s European division…
