Matrix Concepts G5 Utility Race Can
What It Is: Matrix Concepts burst onto the scene several years ago with a line of plastic and composite accessories that included stands, mats, and “utility cans.” The G5 Race Can is the newest utility can offering and carries a full five gallons of “liquids” as opposed to the original G3, which – oddly enough – held only four gallons.
Why It Is Cool: First of all, yes, I realize that unless you’re Godzilla, you probably don’t have a Christmas stocking that this item can fit into. Secondly, let’s not kid ourselves: this is a freakin’ gas can! Emissions regulations in many states require all sorts of complicated spouts and caps on portable gas cans that are legal for transportation, and that’s why companies like Matrix Concepts have to call their gas cans, “utility cans.” Lame! To be forthright, you can get a ticket if pulled over with a can like this filled with gasoline, but that would require a really nit-picky police officer…
But getting back to this new G5 Utility Can from Matrix…it’s badass! Look at the design and you’ll see that there are two handles on the side. Why do you need two handles? Well, the top handle is for carrying the can, and the bottom is for lifting and tilting it while you are pouring some sort of liquid into your motorcycle’s some-sort-of-liquid tank. With one hand on the lower handle and your other hand guiding the spout hose to the filler hole, you have a ton of leverage and as a result, more control. Think about the popular square plastic can that we have all owned at one time or another. When it’s full of gas, it weighs over 30 pounds, and unless you’ve got Herculean wrists, holding it by the top handle is almost impossible when filling your tank. That said, you have to cradle the bottom of the can with your forearm, and unless you’re a neat freak, chances are good that the bottom of your can is either dirty, muddy, or wet with spooge that collects from gasoline (did I say that?!?!) drips down the side.
The G5 can also fits nicely inside an upside-down bike stand when you’re loading up your pickup truck, and best of all, all of the caps and fillers seal perfectly when tightened down. If your can tips over in the back of your truck or van, no gasoline will leak or spill!
The G5 is available in black or white with seven different color options for the sticker graphics. But let’s be honest…it’s a gas can: do you really need to have the stickers on it match your bike?
