As is the case every year, the announcement for Team USA was made at the 2018 Unadilla Motocross. There has been speculation surrounding the team ever since RedBud was selected to host in 2018, but with so many injuries this season, a few riders had risen to the top and become natural choices for the team.
This year, Eli Tomac will return to the team as the MX1 rider after opting out of the event for the past few years. He will be joined by Aaron Plessinger in the MX2 class, and Justin Barcia in the Open class aboard a 450. Questions surrounding Tomac’s participation were laid to rest early in the year when he made it clear he would not sit out this year. Meanwhile, Plessinger and Barcia were straightforward choices as they have been successful in their respective classes and have the desire to race for Team USA.
It has been seven years since the United States has won the Chamberlain Trophy in St. Jean d’Angely, France. This year, however, the team is far more heavily favored as they are racing on their home soil. The track layout has yet to be determined, but it is likely that changes will be made to differentiate the track from its usual National layout.
