Matt Hubert has risen through the ranks at the TWMX Race Series at a fairly rapid pace, and we were surprised to see him on the line at the first two Lucas Oil MX Nationals the past few weekends. Though some bad luck held him back, he showed great promise. This weekend, he dominated the action in the pro classes at the West Coast Open series finale at Glen Helen Raceway, presented by AMP Energy.
How long have you been racing and what led you to choose moto?
I started riding dirt bikes when I was five years old, but I quit when I was 12. Then started riding again when I was 18. So I guess I have been riding for nine years or so.
Why did you quit motocross?
I got burned out, I was practicing six days a week, then racing on the weekends, so basically, it was a seven-day-a-week job on a 65!
Do you participate in any other sports or have any other hobbies?
Not at the moment, I used to play football. I was captain on my high school football team for a few years on the varsity team and got a few offers from colleges to come and play, but they formed a motocross club at my school and they had a ride day. From that one day, I got the taste of motocross in my blood again and got back into it, I couldn’t get away from it. I quit football shortly after!
What brought you back to motocross?
It was just a simple practice ride day and immediately I was like, “football sucks!” (Laughs)
How seriously do you take your racing, is it just for fun or do you have bigger aspirations?
I have a lot bigger aspirations, I just raced the first two AMA 450 Nationals. We had a bit of bad luck, but my goal is to get to 20 to score some points. Then get into the top 15, and then hopefully, get a fill-in ride.
Who is the biggest influence in your racing?
Ooh, that’s a hard one. I’m kind of independent, so I just rely on myself. But if I did have to pick any one person, I would say Ryan Dungey. He’s smooth and makes it look effortless, and that’s what I strive to be like. He lasted for like a decade with minimal injuries.
At the TransWorld Race Series we try to offer a better racing experience, what do you think of our events?
I like these races, they always have great vendors, food, and energy drinks. It’s always a good atmosphere here.
Motocross is a really physically demanding sport, do you train for it and if so, how?
My trainer is Kyle Lewis and he puts me through the wringer! But, he kind of goes in waves. So I’ll have one really hard week of a lot of cardio, weightlifting, the whole nine yards, but then the next week I’ll just do cardio. Basically, it’s all cardio.
What is your favorite type of tracks and track obstacles?
I would say favorite types of tracks would be Glen Helen, high-speed stuff and some big rolling whoops are always fun.
Tell me about your bike and why you chose it and what have you done to make it work well for you?
I was riding Yamaha’s about two months ago and then switched to Husqvarnas because they turn a lot better. They’re basically race-ready when you buy them, so you don’t have to do much, but we’re still testing with suspension. enzo racing has been awesome on that, they’ve been really flexible, I’m actually testing out here on Thursday with them! Then we threw a Vortex ignition on it and it runs awesome now.
