Shiloh Angues got a late start in racing, but he makes up for lost time by taking it as seriously as his time allows and putting forth a 100% effort every time he lines up. One of the fast guys in the vet classes, Shiloh actually got into racing when he started dating his wife, Jill. We caught up with his just as he was diagnosing his poor running bike and discovered that he had inadvertently left a plastic bag over his air filter after washing it. Shiloh is one of the coolest guys in the TWMX Race Series…say hi if you see him.
How long have you been racing and what led you to choose motocross?
I started racing when I was 40, before that I was riding dirt bikes but nothing competitively. I got my first dirt bike at the age of 32, my wife had been racing on and off and she kind of got me into it the sport, so I followed suit with her. I sold my car and my street bike, bought a truck, and have been doing this ever since.
How do you like racing in Vet classes as opposed to regular classes?
Riding in the Vet class is pretty cool, I think we all respect each other cause we all know that come Monday we have to get back up to work. So, we come out here, try to push as hard as we can, but at the end of the day we gotta get up Monday morning. Most of the friends that I’ve met through motocross has been through riding the Transworld MX series.
At the Transworld series, we try to offer a better racing experience, what do you think of our events?
They’re really good! I’ve tried a couple of events before with some of the other promoters and definitely riding with this particular organization had me elevate my game. The guys are a lot faster, it’s really good, and goes really quick. Overall it’s been pretty good.
Do you participate in any other sports or have any hobbies?
No other sports or hobbies, I was into weightlifting a while back but found out it wasn’t really good for riding motocross. I cut all that out and now I just focus on training for riding bikes.
How seriously do you take your racing? Is it just for fun or do you have bigger aspirations?
I take it pretty seriously, I train probably five days a week. I’ve had professional trainers, most recently I’ve been training with Zach Bell and because I’ve started so late, I’ve been having to do a lot of catch up to the guys I’ve been riding against, they’ve been racing their whole lives. Every day from Monday through Friday is a prep for the weekend.
Who is the biggest influence in your racing?
It’s hard to say, prior to 2007, I didn’t know who any professional riders were. I didn’t know who Ricky Carmichael or James Stewart or anybody was, so it’s really hard for me to pick one of those guys as an inspiration. So for me, I look at the guys that I race with and those guys are what inspires me to get my butt up Monday morning and work hard and race with them, hopefully beating them.
What are your favorite types of tracks and track obstacles?
I’m getting more comfortable with jumping, Glen Helen is a good track, I really like the rough terrain. I like tracks with rough terrains.
What satisfaction do you get from a good weekend of racing?
The hard work that I put in during the week, pays off on the weekend. Sometimes it’s kind of a bummer when you feel you’ve put everything together come Monday through Friday and then you get out on the track and just blow it, not performing the way you think you should. Just staying consistent with my riding and making sure each time I ride or race, I’m moving forward.
Tell me about your bike and why you chose it, and what have you done to make it work well for you?
I chose Suzuki just because it goes back to my street bike days, I used to ride Suzuki street bikes. To me, they’ve always been a great brand from my experience on street bikes, I stuck with Suzuki and probably sometime last year I met up with Jamey from twisted development who helped me build my motor. Linear Suspension has really helped me out getting this thing dialed in with the air forks and not a lot of people are a big fan of the air forks but with those guys help we’ve been able to get it dialed in. Things are going really good now.
