Wyatt Lyonsmith was on hand at the Glen Helen round of the TWMX Race Series West Coast Open as part of his West Coast moto vacation. After spending a couple years training at Club MX in South Carolina, the Idaho native will spend the next few weeks experiencing everything that motocross on the West Coast has to offer.

You spent several years at a training camp in South Carolina. Can you tell me a bit about that?

I was at Club MX in Chesterfield, South Carolina for two years and then I’ve been living out here for the past couple of weeks. I’m just going to be staying here until after Mammoth and then I’ll head back east.

Why did you move away?

I wanted to come out here, ride some new tracks, see some new things, and meet new people. I just wanted to experience the west coast since I’ve been out there for so long.

How long have you been racing and what led you to choose motocross?

I started racing when I was eight years old, so I’ve been racing for 11 years now. I just tried some other sports and liked motocross way better.

Do you still participate in any other sports or have any other hobbies?

No, mainly just motocross, just racing.

How seriously do you take your racing, is it just for fun or do you have bigger aspirations?

I want to go pro, and my dream is to be on a team one day, but I do have a lot of fun riding and racing every day.

Who is the biggest influence in your racing?

I guess just some of the local pros, like right when I was getting into racing Ben Evans was a big influence. It was always cool to see the local pros at the track. My favorite rider is Ryan Villopoto, but training back at Club MX I rode with a lot of the pros out there and it’s cool to see all the privateer guys go racing every weekend – I think those are probably my biggest influence.

What are your favorite types of tracks and track obstacles?

I like really rough and rutted technical tracks, the faster tracks aren’t really my thing. I like tracks like Loretta’s and that’s really what I enjoy racing.

What is your favorite thing about being a motocross racer?

I love traveling and going to new places and being able to race all over the place.

What would you rather do, holeshot a race and run away or come from behind to win?

I’d much rather pull the holeshot and run away and stay clean.

This is your first TransWorld Race Series event. What do you think of the way we run our events?

It’s been good so far, it’s been fun. There’s been a little bit of a break because somebody got hurt, but you guys can’t control that.

Tell me about your bike and why you chose it and what have you done to make it work well for you?

It is a KTM 250 SX-F and I had Twisted Development help me with the motor, help me speed it up. Pro Circuit Pipes and Cloverdale Suspension has been dialing me in my suspension to make sure I don’t feel any bumps.
