2017 TWMXRS Terra Firma Series | Pala Raceway | Rd. 2
Round two of the 2017 Terra Firma Series, presented by SPY, is in the books, and for the first time in nearly five years, the TWMXRS visited Pala Raceway for a day of racing! October 2012 was the last time we lined up behind Pala’s starting gate, and since the series visits all of the major Southern California racetracks it was only inevitable that we return to the San Diego County facility for some bar-banging action.
Well over 500 riders funneled through the front gates of Pala Raceway and there were a number of standout riders in just about every class. However, one rider in particular caught our attention during practice simply because of his bike; a 2006 Factory Honda replica CR 250R complete with Woody Woodpecker Graphics. Once the racing got underway, Griffin Dexter and his CR 250R stood out just as much on the track, as he displayed a lot of speed along with a smooth, consistent riding style. Dexter put in several impressive finishes, especially when you take into consideration that his 11 year old bike is worth a fraction of the other machines he was competing against. After a number of great rides that resulted in several podium finishes, Dexter was able to edge out his competitors by taking a moto win in Boyesen 2-Stroke Open at the end of the day when the track was at its roughest, and for his efforts he was chosen for the “SPY Breakaway Rider” award. Congrats, Griffin!
It was dé javu all over again in the Intermediate classes, as Matthew Hubert was once again the man to beat. The #47 Yamaha ripper out of Riverside, CA accumulated a grand total of five race wins out of six, ultimately giving him three separate overalls in 250 Intermediate, 450 Intermediate and Open (Non-Pro). Hubert’s worst finish of the day was a second place – not a bad report card!
Round two of the Terra Firma Series saw its fair share of newcomers, and one rider that turned some heads at their first TWMXRS was Tyson Johnson out of Ripon, CA. The two-stroke shredder was absolutely flying around the very rough racetrack, and along the way he racked up a couple race wins for third overall in 250 Intermediate, as well as second overall in Schoolboy. Johnson’s best finish of the day, though, came from 125cc Open where he made a clean sweep of both motos for the overall win.
Thanks to all who joined us at Pala Raceway for round two of the TWMXRS Terra Firma Series, presented by SPY, and we look forward to doing it all over again on August 6th at Perris Raceway for the third stop of the series. See ya there!
