Now that the offseason is here, we've got some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We'll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…
We’re taking it back to the recent days of Ryan Villopoto dominance for “Photo Of The Day” today. I must admit, it was weird not seeing RV out there competing under the Supercross lights this year. It was also a bold move for RV to bow out of American racing after winning 4 back-to-back Monster Energy Supercross Championships (and multiple AMA Motocross Championships), but many saw it coming. We all know how his year went, and we all saw the end to his rocky European tenure.
Onto the shot. This photo is cool to me because this was taken the last time Villopoto lined up for a Supercross race. Obviously by the photo you can tell he won, but he put a serious whooping on the field and I’m going to explain. He led every single lap of the race, never even facing pressure. He set the fastest lap (almost an entire second faster than the rest) of the race on lap 4 while laying down sprint laps, something him and the top guys are known for. His closest competitor Ryan Dungey finished just around 14 seconds behind him. He trained countless hours for nights and seasons like this (he had just wrapped up the Championship the prior week), and executed a perfect win at what would be his last race ever under the Supercross lights. This to me is what he will be most remembered most for: All business, fast as hell, and there to get the job done.
