In between races, we took some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We'll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…
If you're a Southern California resident, chances are you've seen a #47 Honda ripping around your local motocross tracks. Underneath the helmet is 15 year old Japanese import Jo Shimoda, and he's Geico Honda's newest secret weapon. Shimoda moved to the US in 2013 to pursue a career as a professional motocross racer, and after three years of traveling the amateur national circuit he became the first Japanese racer to win a championship at the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Motocross National. The youngster simultaneously grabbed the attention of several professional factory race teams and shortly thereafter signed to Geico's amateur racing program; AMSOIL/Factory Connection/Honda.
Shimoda is an extremely technical rider for his age and he encompasses a riding style similar to that of Red Bull/KTM's Marvin Musquin. I personally see Shimoda on a weekly basis putting in motos at local racetracks, and this kid's capabilities on a motocross bike never cease to amaze me. It should be a real treat when the time comes for him to line up for his first professional race!
