Now that the offseason is here, we've got some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We'll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…
Earlier this year we received an invitation from American Honda for a visit to the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas MotoGP race in Austin to see how the road racing branch of HRC operates. It seemed like nothing could faze the team of highly skilled riders and technicians, even when Marc Marquez’s “1” bike gave out in the waning moments in Saturday’s qualifying program. Instead of just throwing in the towel, the young Spaniard sprinted on foot to the pit area, jumped aboard his backup bike, and obliterated the track record on the very last lap of the session.
As media, we were free to wander the rim of the racetrack and could feel the air change when the bikes buzzed by. The speed and sound of the pack flying to the first turn is an incredible experience, and that more than makes up for hearing damage that you’ll surely suffer.
If you’re not yet a MotoGP fan, we must ask what the hell is the matter with you? Last weekend’s race at Phillip Island was one of the most exciting races of any motorsport, ever, and only adds to the tension as the championship winds down. Yamaha teammates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo are in a fierce battle for the title, with only eleven points between them with two races remaining on the schedule. If waking up early to watch is a pain (roughly 4AM for those on this side of the planet), do it with some European flair by enjoying a bottle of wine or morning espresso. Smoking a cigarette is completely up to you….
