It hadn’t been done in years—three to be exact. The last time we saw someone qualify for the 250 class at a pro National on a 125cc two-stroke was back in 2012, when Ricky Renner managed to pull it off at RedBud. But over the weekend at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, California native Gared Steinke pulled it off after setting the 30th fastest time during morning practice on a borrowed 2014 Yamaha YZ124, which bested Renner’s 2012 qualifying position of 36th, and he then backed it up in the motos by turning in 27-27 scores for 27th overall. Steinke had the High Point fans in a cheering frenzy each time the distinct sound of the small-bore motor rounded the track, and we managed to catch up with the rider in the pits to find out more.
